The valve covers on your 3.8 buick have torque limiting tubes in them. Hand tighten the head cover bolts. Apply rtv sealant to the four flat portions of the gasket located on both ends of the valve cover.

The torque of the the vc fasteners isn't as important as the torque sequence imo. Looking at the cover, the sequence is:

I put it back on with a 1/4 drive.quite a bit tighter than it was. The valve covers on your 3.8 buick have torque limiting tubes in them.

I purchased a new valve cover gasket (the hard plastic thick one with the bead of rubber). #2 · apr 7, 2012. So if snug ends up being 6ft/lbs of torque, in the grand scheme of things you won't have any.
